5 Tips on Writing the Perfect Thank You Card
Have you ever given a gift or done a favor for a friend and then never received a thank you? Chances are, you won’t be willing to help that friend out again. Thank you notes are an important way to make sure that people know you appreciate them.
With the advent of email, social media, and texting, a handwritten thank you note might seem like something from the age of the dinosaurs. However, it is still an extremely relevant method of communication.
The following five tips will help you write the perfect thank you note every time.
Make it Personal
Thank you notes should always be handwritten. Resist the temptation to type it out or use email. Writing the note yourself is more personal and it shows that you took the time to do something special. It is always a pleasure to receive a handwritten note in the mail, especially because it is becoming less and less common.
Use Stationery
Don’t underestimate the effects of using stationery for your thank you note. Use a small sheet of stationery or a nice notecard or postcard. A full-sized sheet of paper would overwhelm your note, which should be short and to the point. It doesn’t have to be fancy or expensive, but using personalized stationery is a very nice touch.
Take Your Time and Do It Right
Slow down and use your best handwriting. Use a good quality pen in black or blue ink. This will make your writing smoother and easier to read. Even if your handwriting isn’t spectacular, people will still appreciate seeing a bit of your personality coming through on paper.
Always use proper grammar and spelling. If you aren’t confident in your grammar or spelling skills, type your letter out and run it through a grammar and spell check program. Then copy it out by hand on your stationery after you’re sure there are no remaining mistakes. You don’t want messy scratch marks ruining your nicely penned thank you note.
Be Sincere
Don’t exaggerate or lie about the gift. Even if you didn’t like it that much, at least thank the giver for her thoughtfulness, for thinking of you, or for the time and effort she put into choosing the gift. Tell her what it means to you that she went out of her way for you.
Additionally, there is generally something good you can find to say about any gift. For example, “I love the color of the slippers you gave me. They are so bright and cheerful!” Of course, if you love the gift, rave about that as well.
Be Specific
Tell her exactly how you will use her gift or how her thoughtful gesture helped you or affected your life. For example, if she brought over a casserole after the birth of your baby, express to them how wonderful it was to pull her dish out of the freezer and not have to worry about cooking when you were exhausted at night.
The exception to this rule is if someone gives you money. If this is the case, don’t mention the amount of money given. Simply thank them for their generosity or kindness. It is also appropriate in this situation to express how you will use the money. For example, if you are saving up for a new sofa, explain that the gift will help you reach that goal.
Writing an effective and appropriate thank you note can make for better relationships, in both your personal and business life. Everyone appreciates being recognized for their efforts, and a well-written thank you note is an excellent way to do this.
